NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A cat named Gracie was shot twice on Long Island on Tuesday, leaving her paralyzed and with injuries that required surgery, police said.
A Glen Cove resident heard cries of pain coming from outside her home on Taft Place around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Glen Cove Police Department said.
When the woman walked outside, she discovered a cat "dragging its hind quarters and… unable to walk," the department said.
A veterinarian who lived in the woman's neighborhood brought the cat to her office — and managed to contact the cat's owners after scanning the feline's microchip, police said.
X-rays showed that the cat, whose name was Gracie, was shot once in the spine and once in the abdomen, the department said.
Gracie was set to undergo surgery on Thursday, a GoFundMe page her owners set up to cover the costs said.
"Gracie's odds are 50/50, it's determined that she will never jump again, she may struggle to properly walk if at all," they wrote. "Gracie is part of our family, Gracie is known around the neighborhood for taking a walk with us and our 3 children and 2 dogs."
"We are so thankful to our Glen Cove Police department for taking this seriously and all we want is our cat home and our family whole again," they added.
