LONG BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A Long Island man was sentenced on Wednesday to 20 years to life in prison for the March 2022 shooting death of an Uber driver and to a separate 2021 hit-and-run that seriously injured a 73-year-old woman, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced.
In June, Shaun Teemer, 24, pleaded guilty to charges of murder criminal possession of a weapon, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, and tampering with physical evidence.
The NCDA recommended a sentence of 25 years to life.
According to DA Donnelly, at approximately 2:24 a.m., on March 19, 2022, the Long Beach Police Department received a 911 call for shots fired in the vicinity of 425 East Broadway in Long Beach.
When they arrived at the scene, police found a dark colored sedan with the trunk and front driver's side door open in the roadway.
As they approached the front door of 425 East Broadway in Long Beach, they discovered 37-year-old Humberto Manuel Francis-Hernandez with gunshot wounds to the head and arm, and multiple shell casings inside the vestibule.
Francis-Hernandez was taken to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in serious condition and went directly into surgery. His condition deteriorated after the surgery, and he was pronounced dead on March 23, 2022.
An investigation determined that Francis-Hernandez was employed by Uber and was picking up a rider in Long Beach at the time of the shooting.
Teemer was identified as the shooter and was arrested by members of the Nassau County Police Department's Homicide Squad and the Long Beach Police Department on June 13, 2022.
In the other prosecution, DA Donnelly said that Teemer was operating a rented 2020 Jeep Compass on E. Park Avenue at the intersection of Pacific Avenue when he struck a 73-year-old woman crossing southbound just after the pedestrian crosswalk on E. Park Avenue and damaged the rental vehicle's passenger side view mirror.
Teemer allegedly continued driving after he hit the victim and did not stop.
The victim suffered a large laceration to her forehead and a compound fracture to her leg. She was taken to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital where she subsequently required surgery.
Teemer later returned the damaged rental car after the incident and requested a replacement vehicle. He told the manager that the vehicle's passenger side view mirror was damaged by a basketball.
Teemer was arrested for this incident in Long Beach on September 7, 2021 by members of the Long Beach Police Department.
"Humberto Manual Francis-Hernandez went to work as a cab driver and never came home because of the senseless actions of this defendant," DA Donnelly said. "Shaun Teemer shot Francis-Hernandez point blank in the head and arm, and sadly the 37-year-old man succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. That was not the only violence inflicted by this defendant, because six months before the shooting, Teemer plowed a Jeep into a 73-year-old woman, leaving her with a broken leg, as he fled the scene. Teemer is a violent criminal, and we are all safer today knowing that he will spend the next 20 years to life behind bars. I thank our partners in the Nassau County and Long Beach police departments as well as my prosecutors for holding this defendant accountable for his actions."
