NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A chihuahua survived after someone tied her up in a garbage bag and sealed her into a container in Westchester County, officials said Wednesday.
Employees at an Elmhurst-based animal rescue group noticed someone had placed a plastic storage container at their front entrance around 2:30 p.m. on April 29, the SPCA of Westchester said in a Facebook post.
When they opened the container, they discovered a small female Chihuahua inside, the SPCA said.
"The dog, now named Rue, had chewed and scratched her way through the tied-up garbage bag, breaking some of her nails in the process but luckily avoiding suffocation," the organization wrote.
Surveillance footage showed someone leaving the container at the front entrance around 9:30 p.m. the day before, it added.
Rue "received veterinary care and will soon be placed up for adoption," the organization noted.
"It's inconceivable that someone could do something so cruel to an innocent animal, and we can't imagine how frightened Rue must have been," SPCA of Westchester Executive Director Shannon Laukhuf said in a statement.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the SPCA's confidential hotline at 914-941-7797, she added.
