Cops seek car thief who stole running BMW outside Long Island home

MERRICK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Officials on Long Island released video footage on Thursday of a suspect sought in a car theft that occurred Wednesday morning.

According to detectives, at about 7:15 a.m., a man was dropped off by a dark gray SUV in front of a Girard Place residence in Merrick and entered an unoccupied BMW X7 that was left running.

The suspect then fled with the vehicle southbound on Girard Place.

A short time later, the BMW was left abandoned and recovered by police in the westbound lane near exit 36 on the Long Island Expressway.

The suspect was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants.

The investigation is ongoing.
