NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday afternoon that 542 members of the New York National Guard are being deployed to Washington, D.C., to support U.S. Capitol security, while the previously 1,300 deployed National Guard troops will "return home."

"At the request of the Secretary of the Army and the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, I am deploying an additional 542 members of the New York National Guard to Washington D.C. to help protect our nation's Capitol," Cuomo said in a statement.

"Our federal government is facing a host of challenges unlike any in modern history, and it needs to be able to conduct its business safely for the sake of all Americans," he added. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I thank the brave men and women in uniform for their heroism and their unwavering commitment to keeping our state and our nation safe."
