UNIONDALE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A homeless man posing as law enforcement was arrested after he was found with a gun and phony IDs at a Nassau County government building on Wednesday morning.

According to detectives, at about 8:42 a.m., John Galifianakis, 73, went to the Department of Social Services located at 60 Charles Lindberg Blvd. in Uniondale, posing as a law enforcement officer.


Galifianakis approached an employee requesting assistance in safeguarding his firearm, officials said.

The concerned employee immediately notified police.

Upon arrival, officers located Galifianakis and found him to be in possession of numerous fraudulent identification cards, multiple firearms and additional law enforcement apparel.

Further investigation revealed that Galifianakis is not a law enforcement officer for any agency and he was placed under arrest without incident.

Galifianakis was charged with two counts of forgery, criminal impersonation, criminal possession of a weapon and five counts of failing to safeguard a firearm. He will be arraigned on Thursday.
