LI man arrested after garage fire ignites fireworks, spreading flames to living room, nearby house

FRANKLIN SQUARE, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island man was arrested on Tuesday in connection to a fire that left a garage engulfed in flames and set off fireworks, Nassau County police said.

Louis Distefano, 57, was charged with unlawful storage of explosives and unlawful possession of explosives without licenses and certificates.


Police responded to the fire at around 2:45 p.m. at 800 Morton Ave. in Franklin Square and found the entire garage in flames.

The fire then spread to the fence of the neighboring house and the garage of another house on Hewlett Street.

Afterward, fireworks set off inside Distefano's garage caused more fires, including one in the rear garage and fence of another house on Hewlett Street, and another in his own house, where his couch caught fire in the living room.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries have been reported.

Distefano will be arraigned on March 20.
