BAY SHORE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 32-year-old man was indicted for murder on Friday in the death of a man fatally struck with a wrench on Long Island, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced.
According to the investigation, at approximately 6:47 p.m. on February 25, 44-year-old Carlos Edenilson Cabrera Alvarez was walking eastbound on Main Street in Bay Shore and Ricardo Siguenza was walking westbound while allegedly carrying a large lug wrench by his side.
As the men walked toward each other, Siguenza allegedly reached back with his right hand, swung the wrench and struck Cabrera Alvarez in the head, causing him to stumble forward and fall to the ground.
Siguenza allegedly continued walking westbound around Bay Shore until approximately 12:50 a.m. when he tried to enter the Goody Two Shoes Bar on Main Street.
The door was locked and by that time there were several employees still in the bar who allegedly recognized Siguenza from a surveillance video depicting the attack that had been shared with local bar owners earlier that night.
One of the bar’s employees called 911 and responding officers arrested Siguenza as he was walking down Main Street.
Siguenza was still in possession of the lug wrench that he allegedly had used to strike Cabrera Alvarez at the time of his arrest.
It is not clear if the two men knew each other.
Cabrera Alvarez was transported to South Shore University Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and placed on life support, but he never regained consciousness. He died on March 11.
Siguenza is due back in court on May 2, and faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
"The brazen violence alleged here is inexplicable and will not be tolerated in Suffolk County," said D.A. Tierney said. "As with any homicide, we will vigorously prosecute and bring justice for the victim."
