LI patient charged after swinging a wheelchair footrest at nurse: Nassau police

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A patient at a Long Island hospital was arrested and charged on Sunday after using a wheelchair footrest as a weapon and injuring a staff member, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Vincent Petrillo, 55, of Mineola, was being treated at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow when he became violent with hospital staff at around 1:10 p.m., police said.


Petrillo, according to police, swung a wheelchair footrest at a 68-year-old male nurse, causing an injury to his right hand.

While hospital staff were trying to hold down Petrillo, a 60-year-old female physician was also injured in her right knee.

Upon arrival, police arrested Petrillo.

He was charged with three counts of assault in the second degree.

He will  be arraigned when medically practical, according to police.
