HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A Long Island school bus driver is facing DWI charges after she was found asleep at the steering wheel on Monday, according to Nassau County officials.
According to police, at approximately 4:50 p.m. on September 20, officers arrived at South Franklin street and Grove street in Hempstead to perform a welfare check of a woman who was slumped over the steering wheel of a school bus.
Responding officers attended to the female bus driver, 29-year-old Mercedes Parada, and observed multiple clues indicating the presence of alcohol, authorities said.
Upon further investigation, it became clear that Parada was intoxicated and was placed under arrest, officials said.
Parada was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Child Under 15) under the Leandra Law, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
All children were accounted for and safely released to their parents, police said.
An investigation remains ongoing.
