NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The family members of one of the victims in the Long Island body parts case whose bodies were dismembered and dumped at three locations said Monday one of the four suspects is their cousin.
Four people were charged last week with concealing a human corpse and tampering with evidence in connection with the discovery of body parts in Babylon, West Babylon and Bethpage.
The four — Amanda Wallace, 40, Jeffrey Mackey, 38, Steven Brown, 44, all of Amityville, and Alexis Nieves, 33, who police said is homeless — have not been charged with killing the victims, identified as a 53-year-old man whose identity is still pending confirmation by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner and a 59-year-old woman, Donna R. Conneely.
Coreen Bullock, along with her brother Charles Williams, stated that the 53-year-old victim, Malcolm Brown, was their brother, and the suspect, Steven Brown is their cousin.
The siblings came to Long Island in search of answers.
"We were all raised together," Bullock told reporters on Monday. "You know, we're a family. Or, at least I thought we were a family and we're just looking for answers."
"I thought they were running buddies," Williams said. "I thought they were close."
All four defendants pleaded not guilty to hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence and concealing a human corpse and were released without bail.
The judge ordered Nieves and Mackey to wear ankle monitoring devices until their next court appearance on March 19.
Suffolk County D.A. Ray Tierney said last week that he's unable to hold the suspects because of New York's 2019 bail reform laws, slamming the outcome as "absurd" and urging the Legislature to make "common sense fixes."
"This is such a heinous crime," Bullock said. "You know, again our mothers, our families, everybody's up in arms over this."
The case started when a girl walking to school on Feb. 29 found a severed arm on the side of the road at Southards Pond Park in Babylon, about 25 miles east of New York City. Police later discovered another arm and a leg. All of those remains appeared to belong to Malcolm Brown, who hasn't been officially identified by police.
The next day, a cadaver dog located the head, an arm and parts of two legs. Those remains appeared to be from the 59-year-old woman, whose last known address is in Yonkers.
Additional remains found Tuesday in nearby West Babylon and in a state park were from the same two people, police said.
