ELMONT, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 15-year-old boy with autism was struck and killed by a car on the Southern State Parkway after he reportedly wandered away from his Long Island school last week.

Christopher Williams, a student at Martin DePorres School, located in Elmont, was found on the parkway approximately a mile from the campus. His family is now questioning how he was able to leave the school unnoticed.

"The school failed him," said Williams' sister, who stated that the school called her mother to ask where her son was, unaware that he had left the premises. She described the loss as "unimaginable."

In response to the tragedy, a spokesperson for Martin DePorres School said it is "reviewing its policies and procedures."

Williams’ sister has created a GoFundMe page to help their mother pay for funeral expenses.
