Man arrested for attacking another with hammer at Long Island shelter

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A resident at a Long Island men's shelter was arrested Sunday night following a hammer attack, authorities said.

At approximately 10:43 p.m., the police were notified of an assault in progress at the Community Housing Innovations located at 629 West Main St. in Riverhead.


Upon arrival, officials determined that resident Kurtis Eggers, 38, struck another resident in the head with a hammer.

Eggers fled on foot after the assault.

Members of Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance treated the 52-year-old victim on scene for non-life threatening injuries.

After an extensive search the Riverhead Police K9 Unit and patrol officers located and arrested Eggers.

He was charged with one count of assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.
