NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — After a two-year stint at Newark’s Prudential Center, MTV announced that its 2024 Video Music Awards would return on Sept. 10 and be held back in New York State, at Long Island’s UBS Arena.

The live show will be aired globally starting at 8 p.m. EST in more than 150 countries and territories, captivating 319 million households with musical performances, tributes and celebrity appearances.

"We are excited to welcome back the MTV Video Music Awards to New York State,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. “From its origins at Radio City Music Hall in 1984 to this September's event at the UBS Arena, the VMAs continue to captivate millions, showcasing the very best in music video artistry."

UBS Arena, home to the New York Islanders, opened in Elmont, New York, in 2021 and has quickly become a popular area venue.

On WCBS 880’s Newsline with Brigitte Quinn, Senior Vice President of Programming for the arena, Mark Shulman, spoke to the capabilities of UBS to host an event of this scale.

“It’s really a great moment, working hand in hand with our partners over at MTV, just an amazing moment for the arena which really is going to bring that global spotlight back to the amazing facility that we built at Belmont Park,” Shulman said. “The arena offers these just amazing production capabilities, acoustics, fan experience. It’s a true home for artists offering unmatched backstage amenities.”

MTV executives shared a similar enthusiasm for the partnership.

“We’re excited to bring this year’s VMAs to UBS Arena, one of the country’s newest and most cutting edge,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events, Paramount and chief content officer, Music, Paramount+. “Celebrating one of music’s biggest night with the incredible, robust New York area fans is something we’ve been looking forward to the moment last year’s show ended.”

Shulman said that there will be a series of announcements leading up to Sept. 10 giving insight into presenters, performers and more of what to expect from the awards show.

“The next, you know, four months are all about building up so many great experiences for both the attendees and the artists, and we’re going to be attracting the biggest artists from around the globe to this event,” Shulman said.
