NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski died by suicide at his Buffalo-area home Tuesday, according to the Buffalo News. He was 61.
Terrence M. Connors, a trial lawyer in Buffalo, told the newspaper that he was informed about the death Tuesday morning and has been with the Michalski family at their home since.
"It's heartbreaking," Connors said. "He was such a good guy. This just didn't have to happen."
Just 12 days before his death, on March 24, federal and state officials executed a search warrant at Michalski's home in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst, looking for evidence of tax crimes, The Buffalo News previously reported, citing two government sources.
Michalski found himself in the public eye in February 2021, when he was hit by a slow-moving freight train. A judge called it a "suicide attempt" after it happened just days after federal agents contacted him about his friendship with a local strip club owner.
