RAMAPO, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — An Orthodox Jewish man was stabbed in his own driveway in the New City section of the Town of Ramapo on Thursday night, police said.
At about 8:27 p.m., police responded to Trailside Place and discovered that the victim had been attacked in his driveway by an unknown suspect. He was stabbed multiple times.
The victim was transported to an area hospital where he is in stable condition and expected to survive his injuries, officials said.
“They did locate a potential suspect, the potential suspect cooperated with police and came into the station to be interviewed. That suspect has been released at this time, pending further investigation,” Ramapo Police Chief Martin Reilly told 1010 WINS.
The home where the crime was committed is in a predominantly Orthodox Jewish community.
“Crime is a rising issue. Every other day you have crazy stories happening throughout the county. Shootings, stabbings, and it happens with increased frequency,” Yossi Gestetner of the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council said in an interview with ABC7.
“I think this is like a little bit more concerning. It’s not just because it’s a member from my community, it’s like, it’s predominantly quiet neighborhood,” Gestetner continued.
Whether or not the victim was targeted for his faith is unclear.
“We don’t know yet, as we continue, the motive of this has not been established yet,” Reilly said. “Our investigators are researching various potential leads at this time as we speak.”
The department said it has increased patrols throughout the Town.
