NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – New York State forest rangers rescued a hiker who fell down a rock face in the Catskills on Sunday.

Rangers received a call around 1:45 p.m. from a 64-year-old woman who had fallen down a rock face near the summit of Cornell Mountain in Ulster County.

The hiker had an ankle injury. Her name was not disclosed.

The injury was severe, and the location was hard to reach, so rangers requested assistance from the New York State Police Aviation.

One of the rangers spoke with the hiker, who informed him that she had splinted her ankle and planned to walk toward Wittenberg Mountain.

A New York State police pilot sergeant transported rangers to the area. Rangers secured the hiker for a hoist rescue, which was successful.

Four rangers hiked up to Wittenberg from Woodland Valley campground to assist the hiker's husband back to his car.

The victim's son took her to the hospital.
