NORTH HILLS, N.Y. (WCBS 880 ) -- Police are investigating after an 85-year-old woman was scammed out of nearly $50,000 on Long Island earlier this week, authorities announced Friday.
According to Detectives, on Tuesday, the victim was using her computer while inside her North Hills residence when she received a prompt to call a phone number.
She called and spoke to an unknown man claiming to work for Microsoft, officials said.
The man then instructed her to go to her local bank branch and transfer $49,000 to another bank account that he had provided the information for, police said.
After the transfer was completed, the unknown man instructed the victim to send a copy of her driver’s license and the bank receipt of the transfer to a phone number that he provided, authorities said.
This incident is under investigation.
