NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A New York-based imports company issued a recall of its sun-dried tomatoes, saying the product may contain undeclared sulfites, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
The recall was posted Friday by the FDA and impacts Global Veg Corp's five-pound packages of "AVIATOR brand Sundried Tomato Halves" with Lot #060923/1.
"People who have a severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product," the FDA said.
The recall began when New York State's food inspectors found sulfites in a product through routine testing, but the packaging didn't list sulfites as an ingredient.
Each product's label states it's from Turkey and is "Imported and distributed by GLOBAL VEG CORP NEW YORK."
The products were distributed nationwide.
Global Veg Corp said it was aware of affected products being sold in New York and New Jersey, and not nationwide, as the statement on the FDA website indicated, according to a company statement sent to ABC News.
In an email to ABC News on Tuesday, Global Veg Corp also stated that they had mislabeled a few dozen sun-dried tomato cartons in New York, but have now corrected the labels on those and any remaining stock.
The company assured that the products are safe, emphasizing that the issue was purely related to labeling.
No illnesses or adverse reactions involving this product have been reported to date.
