CENTEREACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Six teens were arrested on Monday for breaking at least one fence in Suffolk County during a TikTok challenge based on the Kool-Aid Man, police said.
Suffolk police said a Centereach homeowner on Cobblestone Court heard loud noises around 1 a.m. and noticed on surveillance cameras that six males, ages 12 to 18, had kicked down several portions of his fence.
The teenagers returned at 4:07 a.m. and ran through the fence at the same time as part of the social media stunt known as "The Kool-Aid Man."
"The Kool-Aid Man" starred in commercials for the popular powder drink in the 1970s and 1980s. In the ads, kids would shout, "Hey, Kool-Aid," and the massive red pitcher would instantly break through walls, fences and ceilings to quench their thirst.
The homeowner called 911, and police found a black Hyundai sedan matching the description of a vehicle seen near the scene. The group was then arrested on Hammond Road at 4:15 a.m.
An investigation later found that some of the boys had also damaged other fences in Centereach and Selden. Detectives are investigating whether there are more instances.
The five boys and an 18-year-old were charged with several counts of third-degree criminal mischief and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
The boys were released on family court field appearance tickets and are scheduled to be arraigned at Family District Court in Central Islip on March 6.
