NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — In a 38-page Manhattan Supreme Court document filed on Tuesday, former President Trump and his lawyers accused Attorney General Letitia James of targeting him for "selective prosecution" to amp up her political career and also urged the judge to reject the subpoenas for testimony from him and two of his children.
The filing cites multiple remarks by James which "improperly and repeatedly threatened investigation and prosecution of former President Trump and his family as a campaign promise to garner votes, money and support, and now, as Attorney General, to gain political support."
One of the examples the documents allude to is a 2018 campaign video in which James is quoted saying Trump "engaged in a pattern and practice of money laundering" and "can be indicted for criminal offenses."
The court filing said James was making baseless allegations against Trump at the time and promised to investigate him for money laundering without any evidence for the allegations.
This incident, along with others like tweets from James about Trump and an appearance on the talk show "The View" where James laughs at a comment about Trump, prove James has "impermissibly targeted" Trump and associates, according to Trump's lawyers.
The lawyers add James' statements are a violation of the presumption of innocence, an ethical legal matter which requires prosecutors to 'refrain from speaking in public about pending and impending cases except in very limited circumstances.'
Tuesday's court filing by Trump is the latest in the ongoing legal tension between James and Trump. Last week, James filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit Trump filed in December in an attempt to stop James' investigation into him and his company.
