NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A United Airlines flight bound for Puerto Rico had to return to Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday morning and make an emergency landing, the FAA said.

The crew aboard Flight 2143 reported a possible mechanical issue while the Boeing 767-400 aircraft was above the Atlantic Ocean on route to San Juan International Airport. This prompted the pilot to turn back.

The plane returned safely to Newark Airport at 11:40 a.m., the FAA said.

According to United, there were 230 passengers and nine crew members on the flight.

"The aircraft landed safely and customers deplaned normally at the gate," the airline said in a statement. "We’ve arranged for a new aircraft to fly customers to their destination later today."

Officials said that the FAA will investigate the incident.
