NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A heat advisory was extended until the weekend for most of the New York area, as hot and humid weather continues to engulf the city.

The heat advisory, originally set to expire Friday night, was extended until Saturday night. It impacts all five boroughs, North Jersey, the Hudson Valley and most of Long Island. The rest of New Jersey is under an excessive heat warning, the most severe type of heat alert.

The high reached 95 degrees in Central Park on Thursday, five degrees short of the record of 100, set on Aug. 1, 1933.

The stifling heat returns Friday with a high of 91 degrees and RealFeels over 100 forecasted for Central Park, according to AccuWeather.

The city is expected to narrowly avoid an official heat wave—at least three days of 90-degree heat—as temps are set to dip to 89 on Saturday. But it'll still be hot and humid, with RealFeels again nearing 100, as New Yorkers sweat through the dog days of summer.

In addition to the heat, severe weather is in the forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Severe storms—packing gusty winds and heavy rain—are possible during the afternoons and evenings all three days.

Temps will cool a bit Sunday—to about 85 in the city—but are expected to approach 90 again on Monday.

The rest of next week looks much cooler, with temps in the low 80s and even the upper 70s by Friday.
