NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- RealFeel temperatures will near a blistering 110 degrees this week in the New York City area in what's shaping up to be the city's first heat wave of the summer, according to AccuWeather.

An official heat wave would mean at least three days of highs at 90 or above, which could happen between Wednesday and Saturday.

The muggy heat was already being felt Monday with highs of about 88 in the city and RealFeels in the low 90s.

Thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon or evening, especially in New Jersey and the Hudson Valley suburbs. Residents should watch for heavy downpours and gusty winds.

It will be hot and humid again Tuesday with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s and RealFeels in the mid 90s.

The days of dangerous heat ramp up in New York City on Wednesday, when a high of 88 is currently expected.

Temps will climb to about 92 on Thursday, 93 on Friday and 90 on Saturday.

RealFeels will be a brutal 109 on Thursday and 105 on Friday, according to the current forecast. They'll near 100 on Saturday.

The blistering highs comes as a brutal heat wave has baked a swath of the U.S. West and South for weeks and spread to the Midwest.

"For much of July hot dangerous conditions have been the normal in parts of the West, Texas and Florida," the National Weather Service said. "These summer conditions will build and expand across the Eastern two-thirds of the country this week, starting in the north-central states and Plains."

There is relief in sight. A stormy weekend should bring temps down to about 80 in the city by Sunday. The cooler weather is forecast to continue as August begins next week.
