NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — After making landfall on Sunday in South Carolina, downgrading to a tropical depression and soaking North Carolina and Virginia, the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal are bringing days of thunderstorms to the New York City area as the weather pattern moves northeast.

New Yorkers returning after the holiday weekend should be prepared to pack their umbrellas for the start of the work week, which the National Weather Service described as having “generally unsettled conditions” with shower and thunderstorm chances each day.

Monday afternoon will see some clouds and sun, with a high of 84, AccuWeather said. But the surge of tropical moisture will bump RealFeel temperatures to the low to mid-90s as humidity settles in the city, and a couple of showers and a thunderstorm are expected to fall through early evening.

NYC Emergency Management warns that precipitation is expected mainly after 2 p.m., with the highest change of heavy rain between then and 7 p.m.

There could be drenching downpours during that time, and commuters should watch for ponding on streets and highways or localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying or poor drainage areas.

“Use caution when traveling and expect delays, especially during the evening commute. Do not drive through flooded streets. Secure outdoor items that could be moved by winds. When thunder roars, go indoors,” the agency said.

Later Monday night will be warm and sticky with the low dropping to only 75, before it climbs back up to 90 the next day.

Tuesday will be partly sunny, hot and very humid with a couple thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening that could produce damaging winds and cause flash flooding. RealFeel temperatures will hit the upper 90s, AccuWeather said.

Rainfall totals could reach one to two inches, NYC Emergency Management said, with higher amounts possible in areas that experience repeated storms.

Wednesday will remain warm and humid with a high of 86, times of sun and clouds and a stray afternoon thunderstorm.

Temperatures drop more significantly on Thursday to 80, and humidity persists through a couple more showers and a heavier thunderstorm.

AccuWeather said that clouds will remain in place on Friday for another shower or two as highs stick near 80.
