NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Extreme heat and humidity will grip the New York City area on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the heat index surging towards 100 degrees before temps bottom out later this week.
A Heat Advisory was issued for all of NYC and much of North Jersey until Wednesday night. An Air Quality Alert was also posted for most of the area during that time. This is the earliest a Heat Advisory has been issued for NYC in 30 years.
The high reached 92 in Midtown with RealFeels in the mid-90s. The high temp was shy of the record of 99, set on May 19, 1962.

Lows will only dip to about 76 in the city on Tuesday night before the heat cranks up again Wednesday. It’s set to be about 93 in the city, a few degrees short of the record of 96, set on May 20, 1996.
In addition to the brutal heat, there’s a chance of strong thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The heat will break late Wednesday as a cold front from the west barrels into the Tri-State, according to AccuWeather.

Thursday’s high will be 70 degrees, which is the average for this time of year. Friday’s high will be just 65.
Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, temps will stick to the 60s on Saturday and Sunday. Periods of rain are possible both days, but conditions may clear for Memorial Day.
