NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A winter weather advisory is in effect for New York City and much of the Tri-State as a storm with the potential to drop several inches of snow hits on Thursday morning before days of frigid cold.

The weather advisory lasts until 1 p.m. as a cold front moves in and changes early rain to snow during the morning commute.

The city and surrounding suburbs will see anywhere from a coating to 1 or 2 inches of snow, according to AccuWeather. Long Island will likely see closer to 2 inches, while the Lower Hudson Valley is expected to see an inch or less.

While it may snow hard for a couple of hours, roads will be mainly wet in the city and coastal areas. However, slushy and slippery conditions are more likely further inland.

New York City's Office of Emergency Management issued a travel advisory for the morning, warning commuters to avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

"As more snow heads our way, New Yorkers should prepare for slippery road conditions and a messy commute on Thursday," said  NYC Emergency Management Acting Commissioner Christina Farrell. "We urge New Yorkers to exercise caution. If you must travel, we encourage the use of mass transit and please allow for extra travel time."

Alternative side parking rules have also been suspended for the day.

The city's Sanitation Department pre-deployed over 700 salt spreaders to pretreat roadways ahead of the storm and prepared to dispatch plows if more than 2 inches of snow accumulates.

It's brisk and bitterly cold overnight Thursday into Friday. The low will be just 13 in the city, while RealFeels will plunge below 0.

Friday is very cold despite some sun. The high will be 22 and RealFeels will be in the single digits or teens.

Forecasters continue to watch a potential coastal storm for Saturday, but at this point it appears any snow from the storm will stay offshore to the east.

The weekend is otherwise cold and cloudy. The high will be 26 on Saturday and 32 on Sunday.

The cold weather continues on Monday, when it will be in the upper 20s.

Snow and flurries may pop up again Tuesday. Highs will be in the low 30s.
