HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Dozens came to the chilly Lido Beach West Town Park Monday to see the sad sight of a humpback whale that had washed ashore.

"In the summer now, we see dolphins out there, and then to just see this, it's just a sad situation," one woman said.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin said it's the first whale to wash up on Lido Beach in about four years.

"It's a good 20 feet up from where the water was," he said.

Many are speculating about a cause of death, including a vessel strike.

An necropsy will determine how the 35-foot whale died.

It's the 10th large whale to wash up in the region since Dec. 1, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
