HACKENSACK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A 76-year-old woman was fatally struck by two vehicles while crossing the street Thursday night, officials said.

At about 8:35 p.m., Carol Ventura was at a crosswalk at the intersection of Passaic Street and Summit Avenue when she was hit by a pickup, Hackensack Police Capt. Nicole Foley said.

The pickup was turning southbound from Summit Avenue and headed eastbound on Passaic Street.

According to Foley, Ventura was then "struck by the trailer of a landscaping truck that was traveling westbound on Passaic Street."

She was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the pickup told officers he had a green light but only saw Ventura after he struck her, Foley said.

The driver of the landscaping truck said he was "traveling straight through the intersection," also with a green light and did not see the victim until the back portion of his trailer hit her, Foley said.

The fatal accident is under investigation and Foley noted that "it does not appear that she had the right of way."

. Both drivers remained at the scene and were cooperative with officers, Foley said.

"It should be noted that a pedestrian in a crosswalk at a traffic signal only has the right-of-way if the signal in the same direction as the pedestrian is walking is green," Foley said in a statement.

"Or, at a signal with a pedestrian crossing device (which this intersection does not have), the white hand/walk signal must be illuminated," Foley said.
