NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- "We can't go on like this."
That was United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' warning to world leaders at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly Tuesday.
Guterres, citing "an era of epic transformation," cited climate change and wars in the Middle East, Ukraine-Russia and Sudan.
"We are edging towards the unimaginable — a powder keg that risks engulfing the world," Guterres said.
Guterres described the war in Gaza -- which kicked off after U.S.-designated, Iran-backed terror group Hamas' Oct. 7 massacre -- is a "nonstop nightmare that threatens to take the entire region with it." He also took the opportunity to slam Israel's bombardment of terror group Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, saying such strikes have put Lebanon "at the brink." As for Ukraine, he said there is no end in sight to its war with Russua. As for Sudan's civil war, he said, “a brutal power struggle has unleashed horrific violence [and a] humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding as famine spreads."
Guterres cited "appalling levels of violence and human suffering” in countries, including Myanmar, Congo, Haiti, and Yemen
Despite his less-than-rosy outlook, Guterres claimed, "the challenges we face are solvable."
