BAY SHORE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A World War I–era German machine gun was stolen from the roof of a Long Island Marine Corps veterans group, according to police.

The Maschinengewehr 08, more commonly called MG 08, had been fixed to the top of the Marine Corps Suffolk County Detachment building on the Sunrise Highway service road in Bay Shore.

It weighs more than 140 pounds and is valued at about $20,000.

The gun was stolen earlier in the month but was reported missing on Saturday, officials said.

The antique is inoperable and worn from decades of weather exposure.
