The rest of the Mets season will be about development and evaluating for the future, but general manager Billy Eppler isn't ready to evaluate Ronny Mauricio at the big league level just yet.
"There's just still some things we want to see, both on the offensive side and defensive side with him," Eppler told Joel Sherman of the New York Post on the latest episode of The Show podcast.
"I don't want to put somebody in a position with all the lights, all of the focus and everything on them unless they're banging the door down. He's a young, talented thoroughbred. But we also want to just be mindful of the stage here and the gravity and the responsibility that kind of comes with that."
The Mets recently demoted Brett Baty to Triple-A to join Mauricio, who is posting an .819 OPS with Syracuse this season. Fans have clamored to see Mauricio in the majors, especially after the Mets sold at the trade deadline, but Eppler may see Baty as a cautionary tale to hold off promoting top prospects until the organization is fully confident in their readiness.
"Still just need to see more of the objectives or boxes checked before we go down that path," Eppler said.
