Reports emerged on Monday of the specifics regarding Shohei Ohtani's massive contract, with many balking at the idea of all but $20 million of his record $700 million contract being deferred until after his 10-year deal expires.
The Boomer and Gio crew are among that group, and don't like what it means for the sport.
"It shouldn't be allowed in the game of baseball," Boomer said. "How he handles his money, I don't care…They're creating rules to keep guys from leaving the state or companies leaving the state. It's amazing how the long arm of the tax man is in everybody's pocket."
The cap hit against the luxury tax comes out to around $46 million per year, but Ohtani will make just $2 million per year on his new deal, then make $68 million a year for 10 years beginning in 2034. It certainly puts the Dodgers in play for several other big free agents thanks to the agreement, which reportedly was similar to how other teams pitched Ohtani during his free agency.
"This is nonsense," Jerry said. "It shouldn't be allowed."
"Who the hell knows what the world is gonna be in 10 years?" Gio said. "This is why I don't understand. Take the money, man. Take the money when you get the money."
