Boomer & Gio: Steve Cohen's press conference was a public plea to David Stearns

Boomer and Gio’s main takeaway from Steve Cohen’s press conference on Wednesday afternoon? The Mets owner really, really wants David Stearns as his president of baseball operations.

“Yesterday was a bullhorn message to David Stearns,” Boomer said. “He basically said he has to wait for his guy, and he knows who his guy is. It’s most likely David Stearns.”

Stearns stepped down as the Brewers GM after last season, but remains in a Milwaukee in an advisory role this year. He guided the Brewers to four straight playoff appearances during his tenure, and reports indicate that he could be heading back to his home city this winter and joining the Mets front office. Boomer says Wednesday was Cohen’s public plea to Stearns to come home.

“I still think this whole thing was about David Stearns,” Boomer said. “This guy’s contract is up at the end of 2023, he’s 38 years old, from Manhattan, went to Harvard, he actually started with the Mets in their Arizona Fall League…that’s the target.”

Gio agreed that it was the dominating topic, but he doesn’t see how the hiring of Stearns is an instant fix that addresses the issues that have plagued the 2023 team, even with a record payroll.

“It took this turn into this president of baseball operations thing where it was all people could focus on,” Gio said. “Every question became about that, and he talked about it over and over again as if that was the thing that was going to fix everything.”
