Boomer's Rangers looked like the dominant team on Tuesday night, drubbing the Devils 5-1 in the series opener in Newark to steal home ice advantage.
But, naturally, Boomer still has big concerns, even after how his team looked on Tuesday, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first period and never looking back.
"What I worry about is how many opportunities they had on Igor [Shesterkin] close in…that's still there," Boomer said. "Igor had to stand on his head a couple times. Obviously, that's what you pay him for, but at the end of the day, those turnovers are gonna wind up killing you.
"Patrick Kane was not great. I don't know what he was doing out there. there were times he looked like me out in Lake Placid.
"I'm not gonna sit here and fool myself and say this 5-1 game was a total wipeout. It wasn't. There were turnovers galore, and there are gonna be turnovers against a team like the Devils…and someone on the Rangers has to welcome Jack Hughes to the playoffs. You cannot allow him to skate around like it's Ice Capades out there."
Still, the Devils weren't able to capitalize on any turnovers, Hughes had a penalty shot goal and nothing else, and New Jersey's speed didn't help get as many pucks through on Shesterkin, as New York built a wall in front of their netminder and piled on the blocked shots. So it wasn't all complaining from Boomer.
"Igor was great, he gets an A+," Boomer said. "The penalty kill and the power play get an A+. Barclay Goodrow gets an A+ for blocking shots and getting in the face of a number of Devils players."
