Brian Daboll drew heavy criticism from fans, reporters, and analysts for some of his decisions on Sunday, including going for a field goal up by three with less than a minute to go when one more yard would have meant icing the game.
Instead, Gano missed the field goal, the Jets marched down the field and tied the game, and Gang Greenw on it in overtime.
After the game, Daboll explained his decision making.
“Kick a field goal there, they have 24 seconds with no timeouts, and they need a touchdown,” Daboll said. “Counted on making a field goal and them having 24 seconds to drive the length of the field with no timeouts.
“There’s always a flipside. I understand what it is. Hindsight, I understand the question. Completely legitimate question…That's the decision we made. It didn't work out.”
Daboll went for a field goal in a similar situation earlier in the game, and Gano missed that field goal as well, as the Giants left six points on the board.
“Sometimes, it doesn't work out,” Daboll said. “I accept responsibility for that, but you sit down, we have discussions, we talk about it over the headset, and you make a decision…it didn’t work out. We still had a few seconds there at the end to stop them and give them credit. Disappointing loss.”
