When Craig Carton teased his big news at the top of Tuesday’s Carton & Roberts, he first tempered it by reminding everyone that it was 11 years ago today – Dec. 29, 2009 – that the Mets signed Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million contract that turned out to be anything but good, and ended a year early when the Mets released him in November 2012.
Eleven isn’t exactly a tentpole anniversary – but in wedding lore, the 11th anniversary is the steel anniversary, which is ironic given Bay was anything but strong and durable as a Met.
He was, however, once the subject of one of Al Dukes’ epic morning show songs, and Al just had to pile on Bay Day with a remembrance of wanting a hit from J-Bay, just one time.
With apologies to Britney Spears, here it is: Al Dukes’ lament of Jason Bay’s terrible tenure in Queens!
