If Sunday was Denzel Mims’ final game as a Jet, well, he may have given general manager Joe Douglas a little extra leverage when it comes to trade talks – but head coach Robert Saleh may have given Mims a vote of confidence otherwise.
Mims requested a trade from Gang Green earlier this week, and during Sunday’s CBS broadcast of the Jets-Giants preseason finale, Douglas told Ian Eagle that there was no new news on the trade front, but the Jets wanted to do right by Mims while also doing what’s right for the organization.
Well, on Sunday, Mims rewarded the Jets with seven catches for 102 yards and a touchdown, which came on this beauty in the fourth quarter from Chris Streveler:
Starting QB Joe Flacco didn’t connect with Mims on Sunday, but was happy to see the third-year receiver get some shine in the game.
"Denzel's an awesome kid. He is getting better and better and better,” Flacco said. “I think today you could see his length, his big body, and his speed on display a little bit. When you’ve been teammates with a guy as long as we have, it’s good to see a guy go out there and excel.”
Saleh said after the game that Mims was “gritty” and “one of our six best receivers,” and “will be here as far as I’m concerned,” but when asked about his relationship with the coach after the game, Mims paused before saying he respected Saleh.
He also said that he “loves” the Jets, but referred all further talk of the trade request to his representation.
Rosters must be cut from 80 to 53 by 4 p.m. Tuesday, so it’s possible Mims could be moved before that deadline – although given Saleh’s comments, this may be an impasse that drags on.
