Braves first baseman Matt Olson, on the latest episode of Pardon My Take, had the following to say when asked about Atlanta’s run to a division title last season:
“I remember seeing a clip of a different dude saying the division is over or something like that, and that was in July, when they had the big lead,” Olson said, referring to the Mets stranglehold on the NL East last summer. “It’s not like we needed any extra motivation or anything like that, but it’s funny to look back on it.”
Sal was made aware of the clip, as he once again had to be reminded of himself declaring the division race over in June of last year, when the Mets held a commanding 10-game lead, only to blow it in September.
“It’s me, I’m the other dude!” Sal said. “A part of me is like, ‘I got in the Braves’ heads,’ but then I’m thinking, they won! The Mets made me look bad yet again! That makes me even more angry.”
Many haven’t let Sal live it down, though Sal rightly points to the Mets as the ones to blame for that epic collapse. Now, a year later, as Atlanta is cruising toward another division title, comments like Olson’s are making the sting of last season linger.
“I got in that Braves dugout, I got in that clubhouse, and they had the last laugh,” Sal said. “Now this year, they’re up 21 games on the Mets. And you wonder why I can’t take it anymore.”
