Doug Mientkiewicz, in an interview with Foul Territory last week, unloaded on his former high school and Yankees teammate Alex Rodriguez in regards to Rodriguez’s steroid use and his current involvement with his former team at Westminster Christian School.
“I’ve always said he’s going to die a lonely man, because, you know what? This whole ‘father of the year’ stuff, God bless him with his daughters, because it’s got to come a long way,” Mientkiewicz said. “But it’s like, ‘You’re just trying to get into heaven now.’
“I’m still friends with my high school team. We still text often, not as often as we should, but we still text, group thread, constantly badgering each other. He’s just distant from it. I don’t care how good or how great you become and how far your career goes, you never forget your high school dudes. Your high school and college teammates are brothers to the end…but he’s nowhere to be found."
Mientkiewicz also sounded off on Rodriguez “falling asleep” at an event honoring their high school head coach, and clearly doesn’t care for players like Rodriguez still being in the league spotlight in a broadcasting capacity. He also didn’t like former steroid users getting coaching roles either, calling out another former Yankee great.
“I look at the WBC, and it’s like, Andy Pettitte is the pitching coach,” Mientkiewicz said. “Like, come on man. I know everyone’s like, ‘Well he came out and apologized.’ No, you got caught, bud. Don’t act like you apologized from the start…that’s bulls--t. You got caught, and then you admitted it.
“They keep rewarding these guys. The list goes on and on.”
