Evan was not in high spirits to open Monday’s Carton and Roberts after another series loss for the Mets, and while he isn’t convinced a big change would lead to improved play, he has reached a point where an overhaul of the coaching staff is worth a shot.
Frankly, nothing else is working.
“Relieve everybody of their duties,” Evan said. “At this point, seven games under .500, eight games out of a Wild Card spot, effectively buried, you gotta try something.
“It is June 26. There is no sign of life. You can take Jeremy Hefner, Buck Showalter, or any other coach you want. You can sit them in a rocket ship and send them off into space. It doesn’t matter at this point. Now, I don’t think it’s gonna make a difference, but I’m also at the point where I’d try anything.”
Evan couldn’t believe the outward accountability from youngster Brett Baty after his costly error on Sunday, when seen in comparison to the lack of accountability from Showalter when asked about his bullpen decisions in the disastrous eighth inning. Meanwhile, the front office continues to run out Tylor Megill and David Peterson while pitching Joey Lucchesi in the minors so he isn’t available to help the big league club, and much more troubles that have Evan ready for a change.
“What a disaster,” Evan said. “You got bad defense, you got a bad bullpen, you got horrific managing. You really pulled off everything.
“You talk about an unprepared mess of an organization, that’s who they are.”
