The Phillies had a tough Mother's Day weekend outing against their division rivals the New York Mets, with the most embarrassing moment happening on Thursday when the Phillies managed to blow a six-run lead in the ninth inning.
During the seventh inning on Sunday's final game of a doubleheader, Mets play-by-play man Gary Cohen used his best lipsyncing skills to decipher what was happening with a fan and his girlfriend in the stands.
On Sunday night during the Mets' 6-1 victory over the Phillies, the SNY camera crew pointed to a couple sitting in the stands that appeared to be having an argument.
In the video, which went viral and is currently at over 67K likes on Twitter, (via Mike Golic Jr.) the Phillies fan is shown pleading with the woman (presumably his girlfriend) who was seen crying and completely ignoring his efforts to console her.
Cohen, being the consummate professional and noticing that the cameras were directed at the couple, decided to use the moment to poke fun at the two by trying to interperate what was being said in their conversation.
“No I want you to stay for the whole second game. They might rally, they could win,” Cohen said, mimicking what he imagined the boyfriend was saying as the NL East rivals played a Sunday doubleheader after rainouts on Friday and Saturday.
Fans from both fanbases had quite the reaction to the moment, with some calling out SNY for "doing these Philly fans dirty" and some assuming that the two were going through a breakup.
This was not the only viral moment from the Mets-Phillies series. Thursday’s game saw Phillies fans in complete disbelief over their team blowing such a commanding six run lead.
The Mets come out of their series against Philly as the first team in the MLB to reach 20 wins, sitting atop of the NL East. As for the Phillies, they are second to last in the division at 12-16.
