Sunday wasn’t Wan’Dale Robinson’s NFL debut, but as Giants head coach Brian Daboll said, it might as well have been. Robinson played only nine snaps and had just one catch in Week 1 before suffering a knee sprain that cost him four weeks, so starting in Week 6 was his first extended NFL run.
And, it was good run, as he scored his first NFL touchdown on just his third career catch, a little flare out in the flat.
“I have to give credit to David Sills. He got me a little pick route and DJ (Daniel Jones) put it right there in the flat for me and I got uphill,” Robinson said after the game. “Once I broke out and saw that no one was outside of me, I figured DJ would be giving me a chance. He shot it out to me, and I just had to get up field.”
“When you have that many people out, the quarterback's got to make a decision based on coverage, where to go, when to go there. And he did a good job,” head coach Brian Daboll added.
A touchdown Robinson will remember forever, just because it was his first, and one his teammates were proud to see him get.
“I thought it was awesome for him. I know he's been working his tail off in the training room and I'm glad he got out there,” said Daniel Bellinger, who also scored in the win.
“I'm glad he caught those couple balls when he had the opportunity to. That touchdown, I was excited for him anytime you can get your first touchdown obviously along with a win,” Daboll added.
What meant even more to Robinson, though, was that he made it through his first full NFL game without any issues with his knee.
“I'm satisfied with the results. Just to see it all come to life is pretty special,” he said. “It was really hard (to sit out a few weeks). I never really missed more than two weeks of football in a row, so being out that long was really, really hard. But I was glad to come back and help us win.”
Daboll didn’t know Robinson’s exact snap count immediately after the game, but did say the team “managed Robinson a little bit” and “hopefully we'll get some more out of him next week.”
Jones, for one, can’t wait.
“He made a couple of big plays for us there, did a good job getting open,” Jones said “Good football player, smart player, and he'll definitely help us out going forward.”
