With Damian Lillard officially going to the Bucks to team up with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Gio can’t help but feel gloomy about the outlook for the Knicks moving forward.
“It’s gonna be damn near impossible for the Knicks to win a title in the next 6-7 years, when you feel like you were close,” Gio said. “The only way they can do it is some miracle acquisition of Luka Doncic, because he wants to play with Jalen Brunson again…or they somehow draft a guy, which is even a bigger miracle, who turns into the next Jokic in the second round or late first round, and they just stumble upon him.
“If the Bucks didn’t get Lillard and Giannis getting upset, I could have seen him forcing his way out to come here. Now Lillard isn’t here and Giannis isn’t coming. If you think ‘What about Joel Embiid?’ you think the 76ers and Knicks are gonna make a deal? You think the 76ers are gonna sit there and watch Joel Embiid win a championship with the Knicks? Are you crazy?”
With Lillard off the board, and likely Antetokounmpo as well, Gio is struggling to come up with the next potential star to catapult the Knicks into title contention.
“Now, what is it? They’ve used restraint recently, but it gets to a point where there’s this window, they have those picks…I don’t know,” Gio said. “I’m just annoyed at the spot they’re in. It could be worse, it has been worse, but this is just another guy.”
