Gio hopes Luis Severino deal isn't sign of what's to come for Mets offseason

Gio is a fan of the Mets giving a one-year, $13 million deal to Luis Severino, but he hopes it isn't the sign of what's to come for the rest of the offseason.

"I like it. I like the fact they're giving him a chance on a one-year deal," Gio said to open Thursday's show. "I just hope this isn't the start of a bargain basement type of offseason that David Stearns and Steve Cohen are gonna do after the disaster with the roster last season.

"Is this any sign of what we're going to get this first offseason with David Stearns and Steve Cohen, who said there are not going to be any stars on the team?"

Based on what Cohen has hinted at since the trade deadline last summer, Gio wonders if this will be a quieter offseason, where stopgaps are brought in while the Mets, under the leadership of Stearns, build the foundation for the future.

"I'm not saying it's gonna go that way, but I have no indication other than Steve Cohen saying it's not gonna be like other offseasons where he overspent for guys, and there's not gonna be as many big names on the team," Gio said. "He said that in a press conference after all the crap that happened last season.

"If they go out and get [Yoshinobu] Yamamoto, that changes that entire narrative, but if they don't, and this first year is fill a gap with this guy, rebuild the farm system…that might be year one of David Stearns and not trying to overspend, because clearly it didn't work last year."
