After Max Scherzer was smacked for three straight home runs on Tuesday, Gio is worried that the Mets ace may be living out the same trajectory as another future Hall of Famer that came to New York at the tail end of his decorated career.
“I feel like we might be looking at Tom Glavine 2.0 with Max Scherzer,” Gio said. “I don’t know what’s going on with this guy.
“He had a couple of IL stints last year, he’s towards the end of his career, he’s making over $40 million dollars. He had success in other places, including this division, throughout his career…and he’s come here and been a massive disappointment. You can’t tell me otherwise.”
Glavine was a star for the rival Braves before Atlanta did not want to guarantee a third year in a new contract following struggles down the stretch in 2002, leading the Mets to swoop in and sign him to a four-year deal. Glavine wound up struggling in his first year in New York, pitching to a 4.52 ERA, and finished his Mets tenure with a 3.97 ERA. Gio is worried that Scherzer could be heading down a similar mediocre path, which would be a brutal blow to the Mets.
“He better turn it around this year and be the leader and the ace they need him to be,” Gio said. “Any time you get your ass kicked like that in back to back games, it should be embarrassing.”
