The Rangers are getting set to take on the rival Astros in the ALCS, with Max Scherzer hoping to get healthy in time to make the roster.
Meanwhile, Jacob deGrom, the team’s big offseason acquisition, won’t factor into the postseason as he recovers from a second Tommy John surgery.
As Texas sits four wins away from a pennant without its two high-priced pitchers, Gio says there need to eventually be a “market correction” when it comes to free agent starting pitchers.
“Every single salary has gone up exponentially in sports, and there’s only been one market correction, and that’s been with the running back position in football,” Gio said, at the 40:00 mark of the above clip. “Something’s gotta happen with the starting pitchers in baseball. There are so many examples of this.
“You got Gerrit Cole being a Cy Young and he’s earned every penny, but that team doesn’t go anywhere. Then you got these two guys making $40 million a year with the Rangers, they don’t pitch, and that team is back in the postseason. You don’t have to pay guys $40 million a year to pitch every fifth day to have a successful team.”
Boomer is in agreement, and believes many teams likely already feel the same.
“If you’re an analytics geek in one of these baseball front offices, that would be the first thing I look at,” Boomer said. “They know it. They all know it, but they still pay it.”
