Mets first baseman Jared Young suffered a scary head injury on Thursday night, and was eventually carted off the field and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Young was caught between covering the bag at first and going for a slow ground ball in the top of the sixth inning, while starting pitcher Nolan McLean darted towards first from the mound to cover the bag. At the last moment, Young dove towards the ball as McLean converged, and the pitcher's knee collided with Young's head at full force. Young was seemingly out cold for a moment before trainers rushed onto the field, followed by medical personnel that put Young on a stretcher before he was carted off.
Young, strapped to the medical stretcher and in a neck brace, gave the Citi Field crowd a thumbs up as he was taken off the field.
Per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, CT scans came back negative in a massive relief for Young. While he was still showing symptoms of a concussion, it appears as if he avoided the worst.
Young is in the midst of his first full big-league season, playing in 103 games and posting a .759 OPS with nine home runs.
