The late first-round deal between the Titans and Jets that netted the Jets the No. 26 overall selection included Tennessee sending No. 26 and No. 101 (a compensatory third-round pick) to New York for No. 35 overall, No. 69 overall, and No. 163 overall.

The first two picks were originally the Jets’ selections, while No. 163 was acquired from Pittsburgh in 2020 for LB Avery Williamson. The deal leaves the Jets without a true third, but they still have No. 38 in the second round (acquired from Carolina in the Sam Darnold deal) and No. 146 in the fifth round.

The Jets, however, are the fourth owner of the No. 101 selection, at the end of the third round in the compensatory phase, which is one of two picks awarded to New Orleans in January 2021 under NFL Resolution JC-2A.

As part of that resolution, which is the NFL’s initiative rewarding teams for developing minority candidates for leadership roles, the Saints received a 2021 third and a 2022 third when Atlanta hired ex-Saints assistant GM as their general manager.

New Orleans used their 2021 selection to trade up in last year’s third round, and dealt this year’s selection to Philadelphia earlier this month as part of the deal to acquire the 16th and 19th overall picks/ Philly, in turn, sent the pick to Tennessee earlier Thursday night as part of the deal to acquire WR A.J. Brown.

The Jets used the pick to select Johnson, an edge rusher they were reportedly considering in the Top 10, at No. 26, which gave them – along with CB Sauce Gardner and WR Garrett Wilson, their No. 4 and No. 10 picks – three of ESPN guru Mel Kiper’s Top 11 overall prospects.

Gang Green will now have five picks over the final six rounds, only one of which was originally theirs. Their two Day 2 picks are No.
38 (from Carolina in the Darnold deal) and No. 101, and on Day 3, they have two fourth-rounders – No. 114 from Carolina in the Darnold deal, and No. 117 from Minnesota from the Chris Herndon deal – and a fifth-rounder, their own at No. 146.
