Jose Quintana felt 'a little' rushed with pitch clock in rough Mets spring debut

It wasn’t the best of spring debuts for Jose Quintana.

One of the many new faces of the Mets rotation was shelled in his first time in a Met uniform, recording just two outs before being pulled in the first inning. The veteran lefty allowed five runs on four hits to the Astros.

For Quintana, one of his early struggles was getting used to the new pitch clock rules, and working faster on the mound.

“I felt it a little bit in the beginning and tried to be on time,” Quintana said. “I started thinking more about worrying about myself and not the clock, but yeah, in the beginning, I felt it a little bit. We can make adjustments with that.”

Quintana also pointed to location as being a major issue, something that is pivotal given his velocity, but he threw more pitches in the bullpen after being pulled and felt better about his day, but there is nowhere to go but up after his first outing since signing a two-year, $26 million deal to help replace Taijuan Walker.

“Not good, for sure,” Quintana said. “This outing gave me more idea what I have right now and how aggressive I need to be for the next one.”
